New review addresses micronutrient inadequacy in Europe and critical role of food supplements in health resilience
A recent review published in Frontiers in Nutrition indicates that a significant number of people in the EU are failing to meet the daily recommended intake levels for essential vitamins and minerals, especially among at-risk populations such as children, the elderly and pregnant women.
The review was conducted by Food Supplements Europe with support from its members: The Council for Responsible Nutrition (UK), Nestlé Health Science, Amway Corporation, and Bayer Consumer care.
The authors found that the extent and impact of micronutrient insufficiency and the essential role of food supplements remain under-recognized in public health, clinical training, and practice.
“The review identified that food supplements provide a safe, evidence-based, cost-effective way to bridge nutritional gaps and should be considered in public health strategies,” said Rowena Thomson-Selibowitz, Nestlé Health Science Nutrition Science and Communications Lead for Women’s Health
David Crooks, Nestlé Health Science Nutrition Science and Communications Lead for Nature’s Bounty, added, “Food supplements can have positive implications on workforce productivity and burden of cost to healthcare systems.”
